What’s the greatest ever Olympic performance?

Less than  a week to go and much chat in the BBC offices over what’s the greatest ever Olympic performance. Jesse Owens in Berlin in 1936….Mark Spitz and his 7 golds in 1972….Michael Johnson and his record breaking 200 metres…Bob Beamon and his 1968 jaw dropping long jump. What do you reckon?

So many to choose from…Since I am winter Olympics fan I going to select from that genre. I going to choose Torvill and Dean’s 1984 performance of Bolero. It is among one of the most brilliant performances in any Olympic Games; it changed the ice dancing genre and is the standard to which all other performances since have been judged.

I think the greatest Olympian was Paavo Nurmi(or Daley Thompson).
The greatest performance had to be when the USSR beat the USA in the 1972 Mens Basketball Final.

Watching FloJo win the 100 and 200m was my most delicious pleasure as well as watching an incredulous Carl Lewis get beaten by Ben ‘Steroid” Johnson and then then have the truth come out so quickly. I love track and field. And Powell will win in Beijing just you wait and see …

True abt that Carl Lewis moment! Carl having delivered many such electrifying moments is, to me, the ultimate Olympian! Long live the Olympics spirit!

I recon Jesse Owen winning performance in 1936 in Berlin which made Hitler leave the Olympic stadium in disgust and perhaps made him realise that the German white race were not as superior as he presumed. Also while it was not an Olympic event the defeat by a knockout of the german heavyweight Max Shmelling by Joe Louis for the heavyweight title of the world it made the point to the big mouth Hitler who continually boasted that the Germans were a master race.

Many great ones. The overall performance for one games is, for me, Eric Heiden winning 5 gold medals at a huge range of distances.
