The crisis in Georgia has been called the deepest in European security since the Balkan wars of the 1990s. And unlike the wars in Yugoslavia this one pits Russia against the US, although via a a proxy.

I’m sure I don’t need to explain this to you. When the French Foreign Minister says he doesn’t want war but he fears it, clearly the situation in Georgia has reached a stage where many of us are paying close attention.

Russia’s recognised the independence of two breakaway republics inside Georgia. The backing’s being condemned by the US, Britain, France, Germany and other western countries.
