Gosh, I’d love to see Oregon again. It’s just not in the travel budget, though.
How do we get a news conference to come to the Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, Minneapolis, Indianapolis, Detroit region? Maybe Cleveland, Toronto.
OPB mentioned the name of the pub for tonight, but I didn’t catch it. Can anyone fill me in on that?
The BBC needs a better presence here in the Minneapolis area. The only on air option I know of is a TV show at 10 pm local. As a possibility you might persuade The Current ( http://minnesota.publicradio.org/radio/services/the_current/ ) to put on occasional spots and the regular MPR news service should be easily persuaded too. They also have an excellent new facility with an outdoor area WHYS may like to visit.
To all listeners/bloggers, this is a unique radio station focusing on new and local music of all genres. They frequently have in studio performances. Since they stream online I recommend to everyone to listen at least once.
An entire week in Oregon!? This hotbed of world news? Heck, I think many of my fellow Americans don’t know where we are, never mind the rest of the world (we generally like it that way!). Admit it, you’re just coming for the beer.
Speaking of which, I hope to meet you guys on Wednesday!
Don’t forget to sample some Hood strawberries. You haven’t had a strawberry ’til you’ve had a Hood. They’re only in season about a month, and they don’t travel well so you pretty much have to come here to get them. I think you’ll be here for the beginning of the season.

I have a short piece from the Oregonian where the postal clerk in New York City was going to charge a customer foreign postage because she did not know Oregon was a state. Is it time to team up with Washington and British Columbia and really become another country?
What about the northeast part of the U.S.? You have lots of listeners here, too! Come to New York City.
Yes, You should up to the Northern Districts of New York and not, only to New York City…..

Welcome to Oregon!
You’ll find this a somewhat strange state in the US…socially liberal with a wide streak of native independence. Urban and far-left in Portland and Eugene, rural and pretty far-right elsewhere. Blessed with a fabulous physical setting, Oregonians have come to understand preserving and restoring the environment earlier than others in the US, but there are plenty of folks who turn purple over planning innovations like the Urban Growth Boundary or dam removal.
Take time to see the sights while you’re here, Multnomah Falls (lunch at the Lodge!) and the Columbia Gorge; the Rose Garden (the one with flowers, not the professional ball players’ joint); too bad it’s not trout season…but if you get a chance to go fishing, take it.
And don’t miss Edgewood…a poor farm turned into a brew pub.

Ros, I recommend that you try and get up to Timberline Lodge on Mt Hood, it is a real beauty that was built back in the Great Depression by the Works Progress Administration as a project to give jobs to people. It is about an hour and a half drive from Portland.
Actually, a very scenic drive would be up to Mt Hood and then around it and down through the orchards to the Columbia River and see one of our huge Bonneville Power Dams and the Bridge of The Gods on the way back down river to Portland.
Also, if you have not seen the Pacific Ocean yet we sure have some beautiful parts of our coast to see.
And the Columbia River Bar, where the river meets the ocean, is the most dangerous bar in the world and worth looking at from the Washington side of the river up above the Coast Guard station.
I just tried to give blood today and discovered that I couldn’t for the following reason that I copied from the questionnaire used by the Red Cross.
US FDA states regarding blood donations: “Persons who where born in or lived in any of the following countries since 1977: Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Niger, or Nigeria” are permanently deferred from giving blood. “Persons who have had sex with any person born or living in the above Central African countries since 177” are also barred from giving blood (although I’m not sure if that’s indefinite or not).
Is this blatant discrimination? What about other places with high counts of HIV like Eastern Europe, South Africa, parts of Asia, and the Middle East? Should I tell anyone that I consider having sex with that they should be aware that my country of origin will prevent them from being able to donate blood in the future regardless of my actual health?
How many other countries have such restrictions that target a specific nationality and/or race?
Welcome to Oregon, but I must issue with the characterization that only Eugene and Portland are “far left.” It is a stereotype and Portland-centric thought process that once agan takes the idea that Portland somehow is “better” than anywhere else.
Liberalism exists state wide when you care to look for it. The assumption that it only exists in Multnomah and Lane counties is incredibly naive and shortsighted.
I really hope you get the chance to see something besides the northern edge of Oregon. Come down state to see what the rest of the state is like, hear what the rest of us think, and see there are other ideas that do not come from Portland that are just as liberal, progressive, or libertarian that you will find up there.
Statistically Portland and Eugene are liberal. So rather then some nefarious slight against the rest of the state (as proposed by Troy)—it only makes sense that people perceive Portland and Eugene to be liberally inclined, because they are. This of course doesn’t mean there are not many liberals scattered throughout the state.

WHYS is the shining light of my day. The discussions are wonderful and very informative. I love hearing from people around the world and not having their comments filtered by someone else. I’m especially struck by the courtesy shown all people who participate on the show. You do a fantastic job moderating, as do the others, your ability to handle people in and out of control should get you and Emmy award!
I wrote earlier that I’d like to particpate in any or all shows and would like to provide you some outstanding doughnuts. Haven’t heard back, offer still open.

As a college student with a 45 min daily commute to school, I LOVE listening to you on my way to campus!
My older sister and I, with her two twin two-year-olds (traveling up from eugene) are meeting me in the square friday to see your show.

We at Hatfield Marine Science Center are also the location of some of the most cutting edge research in oceanography, climate change and alternative energy studies. On one tiny campus, Oregon State University, NOAA, EPA, OR Fish & Wildlife, USDA, and USGS collaborate on projects that study current and future environmental effects on our fragile ecosystems. At any rate, your show is the radio highlight of my day, and I never miss it if I can help it.
