The term ‘homegrown terrorism’ has entered the news agenda, yet again.
We’ve addressed this subject many times on WHYS. To give you an idea of how frequently it comes up, in 2010 alone, we’ve done stories on this here, here, here and here.
As mentioned by Ros a wee while back on our trips page, we’re working with our partner station out in south-west Florida, WGCU.
This time next week, Ros, Alicia and I will be on our way to Immokalee. It’s a small town not far from Fort Myers (where WHYS broadcast from the soup kitchen last year, see picture below). Continue reading ‘WHYS in Immokalee, Florida’
To the right is one of the hundreds of refugees – mainly Afghans -camped out in a place called “the jungle” near Calais in northern France, hoping to make it across the Channel to Britain.
This week, French police broke up the camp- an operation criticised by refugee groups.
“The Jungle is our house. Please don’t destroy it. If you do so, where is the place to go?” That’s a question for French authorities who now have to decide what to do with the hundreds of illegal migrants they have just evicted, following this morning’s clearing of the migrant camp in Calais. It’s a common story that isn’t going away, so is it time for some fresh thinking -should we just keep our borders open? Continue reading ‘Is it time to open our borders?’
You can’t miss them in Milan – the Africans, Asians and North Africans huddled on street corners, sheets laid out with fake designer handbags or toys on the ground in front of them. They’re constantly on the lookout for the police, ready to run should they catch sight of one. No wonder – since earlier this month being an illegal immigrant in Italy is a crime punishable with a fine of up to $13,000.

With just four days to go until voters finally decide on the next president, the BBC World Service is in Minneapolis. We’ll be hosting the third in our series of “Talking America” debates – an illustrious panel will discuss the challenges that face the next president. There’ll be a live audience here asking the questions, but what does the rest of the world think? There’s a big focus on the economy here, but what happened to the other big issues – Iraq? Immigration? Trade? Post any questions here, and we’ll try to fit them in. Continue reading ‘Final Talking America debate’
Goodmorning, it’s Karnie…sorry about the delay..my computer’s been playing up!!
Thanks Mike, Brett, Steve and Will for stepping in at the last minute to moderate the blog..
By 2042 whites in the United States will be outnumbered by other racial groups due to significantly higher birth rates among immigrants. Several states, including California and Texas, have already reached the point where members of minorities are in the majority. The change will have far-reaching consequences for politics in the United States, pushing immigration and social reform to the top of the agenda. Continue reading ‘Talking Points 15 August’
Good morning, let’s start today with a comment from Insistent Verite on the World Today’s post about talking to terrorists, which comes from former US President Jimmy Carter’s talks with Hamas in Egypt, which he has had to defend. Insistent suggest we ask “What is a terrorist?” Alternatively we could keep it simple and find out if you think he’s right to talk to Hamas.
Good morning from West London…
There are a number of stories that have caught my eye today. Serbia and the attack on the American Embassy in Belgrade, immigration controls, alcohol controls and controlling teenage pregnancy.
