Afghanistan consists of tribal cultures in an increasingly non-tribal world. Until the Afghan people begin to see the world in a context larger than their own tribes, there is precious little the rest of world will be able to do to help them in the long-term, nothwithstanding good intentions on both sides.

The future of Afghanistan remains bleak, at least in the next several years.

President Karzai appeals to international forces to stay on for 15 more years. The Taliban wants foreigners to be completely out of their country.

Such bipolar views never match. Do not expect miracles.
