Next time someone tells you to “smile”, “snap out of it” or “chill out” point them in the direction of this research. Researchers in Australia have found that negativity boosts judgement, memory and communication.
“Whereas positive mood seems to promote creativity, flexibility, cooperation, and reliance on mental shortcuts, negative moods trigger more attentive, careful thinking paying greater attention to the external world,” says Professor Forgas, author of the study.
