Swine City

This wasn´t what we had in mind. We decided to come to Mexico to hear first hand about the the impact of the drugs trade on life in Mexico. Instead we´ve flown into an outbreak of swine flu which the WHO says may become a pandemic. This is a video I recorded an hour ago in a deserted park down the road from our hotel.

Everyone we talk to comments on how quiet the city is. The pavements are all but deserted where we´re staying, you could walk down the middle of most roads without worrying about getting run over, tourist tour buses have only two or three people riding them (and they´re wearing masks – what a holiday) and most the street food vendors look like they´ll pack up soon as there´s no-one to feed.

And the best fact Ive read so far is that take-away orders and video rental is booming, with disaster movies being the most popular choice this Saturday night.

Interesting part: Started out a one story and becoming part of a different story!

I am hopeful that the team takes in many take-out meals and enjoy your time in Mexico City…

Ros, if you are going to wear a surgical mask, please devise some way of keeping your nostrils covered. As it is, it’s totally ineffective, the way it keeps slipping off your nose and needing readjustment. The lady had the same problem, and her kid just gave up covering his face at all. I worry about you guys in harm’s way. Valiant, but the BBC ought to just bring you back home and test you for flu exposure right now.

I am always baffled when listening to panels of scientists
discussing the cause and effect of global warming as they
completely ignore the elephant standing in the middle of the
room. This planet can sustainably support about 2.5 billion
humans while we are catastrophically approaching 7
billion. Two of the most unhygienic countries on earth,
India and China have joined the frequent flier club big time.
Not far from the luxurious resort hotels on the west coast
of Mexico, children play in open sewers. Even a hardened
terrorist could not formulate a more perfect recipe for disaster
and catch everyone napping. Enjoy the rapture if you’re
so inclined else, stay clean and no hugging!

I call it, ‘Twitter Litter’ because it’s probably yet
another waste of precious band width and another
example of Pathologically Delusional Mass Hysteria.
