    With his demand that the US scrap the missile defense system and his threat to destroy it, the Russian president has made it much more difficult — if not impossible — for Obama to reverse one the Bush administration on this. Obama’s opponents have consistantly questioned his foreign policy sense and “commander-in-chief” capability, so he cannot appear to be giving in.

    Likewise, if Iran truly wants “detente,” it will muzzle its president, at least until Obama has a chance to engage the world.

    One of the most disastrous mistakes of this disastrous administration has been Bush’s irresponsible bellicose foreign policy. He has attempted to make most of the world afraid of the US, thus giving despots and would-be despots a perfect excuse for consolidating their power — they must “protect” their country against an unchecked power. A reduction in the tension Bush created may be the last thing they want.

    Re: Obama’s first news conference

    What a relief to have someone who can talk as our President. Several moments were remarkable, I thought. When he asked the reporter, “What happened to you?” punched my buttons. To me it said that Obama KNOWS that everything isn’t about him. He sees other people.

    I loved it when he talked about his children choosing a new dog, and referred to himself as a ‘mutt.’ Saying this was a verbal thumb in the eye to everyone who believes that their color, their ‘race’, their religion, makes them special.

    Then when the CNN reporter asked him about his meetings where Obama is told what is ‘really going on,’ I felt his demeanor was dignified, and brave. I felt instantly that he had absorbed this top secret information, and that he could handle it.

    @Mike
    If one were going to leave before the dog began barking, would remaining to spite the barking dog demonstrate a level of intelligence greater than that of the dog?

    On a more practical level Obama is likely to issue a few Executive Orders on his first day in office, specifically: Dropping the restrictions on stem cell research and resuming assistance to NGO’s that provide family planning in third world countries.
    There’s probably a lot of other things he can do by Executive Order to immediately demonstrate a shift in policies but, honestly, I’ve lost track of how many things Bush has done that have driven me crazy in the last 8 years.

    You mean like winning an election half-way through his 8 years in office ?

    lol, “wining” is a wide, grey, and relative term.
    In 2000 the corruption was so bad in the industrial players tied to the voting process that individual investigations were launched throughout the country. We all know that the Supreme court ultimately decided that election. They could have decided either way. That was a crap shoot.

    In 2004 it was so blatant the CEO of Diebold stated he would “do anything in his power to get George Bush re-elected.” Here is just one testimony before congress that the vote was rigged in Ohio. Diebold representatives had to testify on 2 occasions before the senate.

    The point is that GW’s “wins” were both tarnished. The result of 8 years of the people not choosing the president is 2 wars, a trashed constitution, security failures, exposed intelligence networks for political gains, and a global recession on the horizon. There is no doubt that the swell of support for Barack Obama is as much to do with the idea of the current régime leaving office as it is about this one taking office.
