Hello everyone. As a new member of the WHYS team Ros has asked me to take over the running of the Talking Points and Blank Pages for the next few weeks and I’m on the hunt for more volunteers….
I’m looking forward to getting to know some of our regular moderators better, but we are always on the look-out for new volunteers who’d like to get even more involved in our global conversation at WHYS.
So if you’ve admired Jessica from NYC’s excellent moderating skills over the weekend and would like to have a go at being a Night Editor on the Talking Points page or Blank Page yourself or would just like to know more about what it would involve please email me. There are just a few guidelines we ask you to bear in mind while moderating, but I’m sure the other moderators will tell you it’s an enjoyable experience!
(A few of the eagle-eyed among you might recognise my name from some recent blog posts – I’m new to the WHYS team but have been a fan of the blog and the show for quite a while. I feel honoured to be now working for the show and I’m looking forward to speaking to many of you around the world in the coming months!)

I’m with Venessa. I’ll help out for a few hours occasionally when I’m around. I’ll email you if I can host. It think it’s best when a at least two can co-mod, especially for the blank page.

I, too, already have moderating “rights” and usually check to see if someone needs help. In another week or so, once school starts for my girls, I should be able to take on night editor for a night. I’ll let you know an exact date soon via email but I’m usually around to help out.

As a Moderator, I can say the the Moderators work as a team to keep the global conversation going. Since we are in different time zones, when one moderator is going to be away, another else where takes over, the moderating baton has never being dropped once. Well done Guys.

And more one thing, it would be great if a system could integrated to help the moderators communicate with each other regarding moderating issues. without having to post on the blog for everyone to see.

That was mentioned before…Perhaps an easy solution would be for all moderators to get a gmail account. Then we can link on the IM feature that links all gmail users on one’s account.
We should get something together for mods, like a YahooGroups group to IM / Communicate. Im definitely with Portland and Nelsoni on that one. Lets get something set up! I wasn’t aware Gmail had a group or IM feature, Ill have to check it out.
I think the IM is a great idea! I know I don’t like to post a comment to other mods on the blog if it’s not necessary; also there are times when I have questioned a comment but had no one to ask about it.
Brett it is very easy to set up an msn group
I had always strayed from MSN because it was incessantly telling me I had to sign up for msn live or something whenever trying to get a simple MSN handle. I dropped it quick as I’m not a fan of many of Microsoft’s ‘optional’ software. Never bothered with it past that point.
I’ll suck it up and do what I need to for WHYS though 😛
You don’t have to any more, Brett. When we signed up for this new handle it just asked us if we wanted anything else, we said no, and boom, off to hotmail.

Venessa ~ I agree with you on that. There are some dodgy comments that sometimes need a second opinion before approving or deleting. Interacting with other Mod’s on such issues will be a big plus.

I’m practically in the same time zone as you, so Night editor is not really an option for me, but I’m regularly checking during the day whether there are comments that need to be moderated and also on the Blank Pages I almost always am there to help out when needed (and I’m looking forward to do another Blank Page, any time!)
Well, as everybody is replying here I may as well say I’m happy to moderate/help with moderation most days between 0100 GMT and around 1400 or 1500 GMT (and generally do anyway whether my name’s on the list or not).
I certainly agree that the mods need an offline method for discussion and am happy to try and fit in with whatever system everyone wants.
Volunteering to help as a moderator for WHYS should be interesting. I would be glad to have the guidelines sent to my e-mail account and spare a few hours to help this global forum. It is also good that we can share ideas with one another using a group e-mail account.
I will continue to do any and everything to contribute to the success of WHYS.

Never done any journalism/moderation stuff before; but have listened a lot to WHYS. Moderating should not be too difficult for me, considering that I am quite a neutral humanbeing. WHY dont WHYS give me a chance to give it a go? Anytime!

If you do get MSN Messenger let me know and I will add you to ours. I can’t get the Yahoo messenger at the moment, it is wayyyyy too big to download on dial-up.
If something gets set up for the moderators to IM each other (or something like a yahoo group, whatever), will someone contact those of us that are moderators to let us know. I echo everyone’s sentiment that it would be great to be able to IM instead of sending an email and waiting for a reply. I have both yahoo and a gmail accounts but am willing to set up a hotmail one if that is the route we go. Just let me know!!
I would love to help moderate, but I’m new…and because of schedules here (I live in the U.S. Central Standard time zone), I would be tethered to Tuesday and Thursday-Saturday evenings, cutting out parts of the week.
