What affects how Pakistanis vote?

Hello from Newshour. Those of you in Pakistan are poised to vote on Monday and Newshour’s Owen Bennett-Jones will be in Lahore on Saturday at 1230 GMT, discussing how you’ll be voting and why. We’d value your contributions, and, wherever you are, if you have a question about the elections, we’ll do our best to get you an answer.Owen will be joined by a panel of people – politicians and commentators – to look at how recent events such as the assassination of opposition leader, Benazir Bhutto and the political crisis surrounding President Pervez Musharraf have affected voters’ political loyalties.

They will be looking at feudalism and other factors determining why people vote for a particular figurehead and party.

Will Ms Bhutto’s killing bring out a sympathy vote? Will people vote for President Musharraf because they think he’s a safer pair of hands – a recent poll suggests this is not the case? And will people flock to the religious parties because they see Islam as a solution?

Will people be voting according to blood ties, so to speak, in other words on the basis of clan loyalties?

And how has that affected the campaign – has it pushed real issues into the background?

If you’re voting in Pakistan, can you help us understand why you vote as you do? Owen will be happy to put your comments and questions to his guests. We look forward to hearing from you.

Being a stratigic partner & allies of USA Pakistan is playing key role in world politics, without any doubt Isriel is a big hurdel between US & Pakistan relation’s.
Presance of ALQUIDA ( Active or inactive) is a turn key operation for both & may be used against any country as on the lable of terrorisam any thing can be done.
Pakistani political slump is because of secret stratagic plan of USA & Pakistan, only Democracy & public openion are the only hurdle from Pakistan side.
No doubt Pakistani public openion is more traditional then Democratic with reflection of Islam, on the other hand US public openion has no third choice with a reflection of Jewish controlled media.
Policy maker of both countries are trying to use Democracy as a tool, no matter who win & loose will follow the stratigic plan accordingly. Infact there is a gap & secrets between Executives & policy makers or technical experts.

It is wrong to say, absolutely wrong, forthcoming election in pakistan will be free fair and impatial.

One man show is being played in Pakistan.
As have seen, the present interim government has been set up without opposition representation and state’s affairs are running on the official party’s indications.

Contesting cadidates belong to official party are using state’s resources in their favour.

Internationally recognised political leader Benazir Bhutto was assasinated in the broad day light due to lack of security.security, as she demanted, was not provided to her and she was easily be targeted by killers.

Where is chief justice of the country, would you like to know,he is in jail his house has been declared as sub jail.Constituitoon justifiably admitt him chief justice be cause no allegation has been proved gainst him and the Full Bech of the apex court reinstated him.

Apex court has been fired, according to my knowledge,60 judges of the higher courts are facing incredible outrage.

A good number of seniour lawyers now are in different jails this time, their agiation against the government is still going on.whole lawer community on strike legal system has also been jamed.

Official political party have a comprehensive plan for pre poll rigging, vote against bet cashe are being purchased, money is openly distributed, poor people are also harassed.bogus beltpapers sre printed the same will used to adding majority in votes.

Applications were filed before before the chief election commission with documentery eveidence but the authority concerned draw no attention.

Opposition parties targeted by insurgent but official league is still safe no such incident has been taken place in their public meetings not withstanding the fact that they are resposible for millitary action on Red Mosque.

In such political senario you are talking free, fair, tansparent and impartial election,

General elections are going to held on 18 this month, parties are also ready to participate in it and some of them has bycotted the election describing these elections as a fruad.

other big parties especially Pakistan Peaples Party and Muslim league(N) has expressed their reservations regarding the forthcoming elections.

According to the abovementioned political parties, government of Pervaiz Musharraf and the king party Muslim League(Q) has made a plan of rigging the elections, they are repeatedly saying government has decided to steal the vote.

Before her assasination, Benazir Bhutto warned the government about her concerned,

Its doubtless to say that PPP.and PML(N) have street power and informed the government that if they tried to change the result both the parties will start agitation which
may be out of control just like Kenya.

It is right to say that there is great similarity between Kenya and Pakistan so fair, free and transparent election has become dire need of the day.

Prime Minister of the United Kingdom,President of the United States,European Union and other world leaders has expressed their concerned and repeatedly said to preside of Pakistan for transparent elections.

Inspite all, ruling party is using influence, government machinery and other all unjust methods to win the vote inspite of the fact that king paty has no popularity among the people.

Being a ally of the U.S.A. against the war of terrore state depart is avoiding to add pressure on Musharraf that is not favourable in creating peacefull situation post election in Pakistan.

Through this artical, I would like to appeal to the Secretary General of the United Nation and other world leaders please come forward and save Pakistan to become Kenya because a strong Pakistan can face insurgencey and erdicate it.

The founder father of Pakistan is Muslim League & still have roots in public with a good moral deserve to win if elections are free & fair.
Other political parties are provan failour with a popularity of corruption except JUP, as far as Justice is concern Pakistan got a good rating in Justice not because of ex chief, hire & fire with in Legal & Constitution frame is essental to maintain quality of work.
Fist Pakistan then any thing else. The slogan of PPP ( Roti, (bread), Kapra ( Cloth) & Makan ( house) ) may not work in election 2008, as the nation need practical not theories.
Any way Pakistani nation have a good political sence & know to whome they have to elect.

    Hello Owen!

Do you really believe that 18th Feb. ’08 election in Pakistan is going to be held quite free and fair despite multiples of obstacles around on the context?

    How and why?

  8. February 17, 2008 at 13:09

Pakistanis are emotional about the injustice and current state of affair, they will resort to protest votes to illustrate their dissatisfaction eventhough the party they choose lack credential.

They have gone one cycle, from secular to Islamic state, military rule to democracy, maybe this time they might clamour for islamic state again, some think that islam provide a solution. The reality is, creation of jobs and security are the main problem, so far most of the past leaders have not measured up, on the contrary corruption has become more rampant, i doubt islam itself could create jobs to appease the people but then they seek solace in it ,in the face wretchedness..

    What effects how Pakistan vote?

with refference recent Pakistan political scenario
it has badly effected president Musharrf
he has come in closed street
the is no way to go out.

Rival parties has won the poll
Pakistan Muslim League(N) and Pakistan People Party
    these parties will not
    at any cost
accept Musharaaf as president of the country
    due to the measures
    taken by him
    in regard to the judiciary
    uphill task for him.

Now there are three options for Musharraf to get him out
    first,he should resign
second,if judiciry restored it will opene the case going on before the emergency
through which he deprived the all from their position .

Third,PPP and PML(N) will produce impeachment motion in the parliment against him
with the majority of vote threw him out of the presidentship

    He is not in position
to advice newly appointed cheif of the army staff for dessolution of the newly elected assembly.

God knows whether winner parties provide him any safe way to get out with respect.
