Obama and Africa

Presidents

President Obama makes his sub-Saharan Africa debut with a visit to Ghana next week and WHYS is doing a TV special to discuss it. We’re looking for African and American guests in London, Johannesburg, Lagos, Washington and New York to take part in the discussion (that’s where we have TV studios), so let us know if you’re interested in participating. On air: Does any country have the right to make homosexuality illegal?

A quick reminder for today, just so we’re clear.

What we’re discussing: If the majority of a country’s population want homosexuality to be illegal, is it acceptable for that to be the law? Should we respect each country’s right to choose where it stands on this? Or is the freedom to be gay, a human right that is non-negotiable?

What we’re not discussing: Whether you think being gay is acceptable.

gayIndia has legalised homosexuality after almost 150 years. Some of you might find this surprising, especially in a  country that is the biggest democracy in the world. But if the majority of people support it, what’s wrong with a country keeping homosexuality illegal? Continue reading ‘On air: Does any country have the right to make homosexuality illegal?’

On air: Is the Islamic world guilty of double standards?

Burqa ladies We had such an overwhelming response to yesterday’s programme on the burqa, and many of you have told us you’d like to continue the discussion, so that’s exactly what we’re going to do today. There were a few clear themes that emerged out of show – Maxine summed up the thoughts of quite a few of you…

Burqa…again?

burqaThe Burqa was a big hit yesterday. Here’s the podcast if you missed it. It’s probably one of the biggest responses with had to a WHYS show in a long time.So here’s what we are thinking. Seeing as so many of you have responded and are still responding (I came into well over a 100 comments this morning), how about we keep the debate going with a continuation of yesterday’s show?

If we do the Burqa again, who do you want to hear from? What question would like to ask? John in Las Vegas wants to ask how do we reconcile the Burqa with conflicting cultural values? And Scott’s broadening it out by suggesting where do we draw the line with freedom of religion? Or like Jim, do you feel we’ve thrashed this subject to death?

On air: Are the French right about the burqa?

You’re still talking about Nicolas Sarkozy’s call to ban the burqa from France. And yesterday Al Qaeda issued this statement,
“We will not tolerate such provocations and injustices, and we will take our revenge from France.”

WHYS and AHYS in 2 minutes

We joined forces with Africa Have Your Say a couple of weeks ago for a one-off special (you may remember, it didn’t all go to plan). A short video of the show has been produced and we thought you’d like to see it.

Dial M for MJ

gold star mumYou didn’t like MJ did you ?

Well, when i say “you” i mean , most of you listening in the U.S- she didn’t seem to bother anyone else.

For those who didn’t hear the programme, MJ is a “Gold Star Mom” – that is, a woman who’s son died serving his country in Iraq.

We invited her on to the programme (she’s been on before) because we wanted to hear people who’s lives have been directly touched by the conflict.

Should politicians’ kids be off limits ?

obama dolls

President Obama says photographers cannot take snaps of his children unless they’re at official events.

But if it’s OK to use your kids when you want to get elected, can you then decree when and where they get their picture taken once you’re in power? Continue reading ‘Should politicians’ kids be off limits ?’
