Talking Points

Israel and Gaza

As the death toll in Gaza exceeds 900 , protests continue to take place from the Middle East to Europe. The Free Gaza Movement Ship representing 17 nations left Cyprus today to supply aid to the region.
Can the protests have any effect on Israeli policy? Do you feel that enough consideration is being made for the humanitarian crisis, even if you support the Israeli cause? If you are in Israel, do you feel safer as a result of your country’s action?

Simon Carr in today’s Independent argues that hundreds of people are dying of violent deaths in Africa, but the world does not seem to care for Africa as much as it does for Gaza. Where are the protests for Africa ? What makes the crisis in Gaza unique? Are some conflicts more popular that others?

In the US, President Bush has given his last press conference claiming that his record had been “good and strong” . The President continued to back Israel whilst having very little to say about Iran. Should he be praised for his confidence or condemned for his arrogance?

His successor, President Elect Barak Obama regards engaging with Iran as one of his main priorities. Is dialogue with Iran the key to resolving the Israel-Palestine crisis? If so, should the world be focussing its attention on Iran and USA? Are these two countries the real problem?

this is unjust world.media talks of those areas which have startegical importance or those ares which have financial values.it doesn’t care when people die in areas with less significance as if human life has less values in those areas.

Africans should be involved in protests against violent deaths that are occurring here, but I do not think that it is their concern at the moment. President Bush can not be held responsible for anything that happened during his term in office, because He had a group of so-called intelligent people that were around him that misled him at times.President elect Obama should be willing and ready to talk to all those that want to dialogue, that’s the way forward in my view.

On Strategic Policy agenda, the middle east has entered a new phase of fluidity. As long as the deadly threat posed by Hamas 0n Isreael persists as well as the prospect of a Nuclear Armed Iran continues backing the fundamentalistic ideaologies of Hamas: namely the Obsolete doctrine of eliminating Israel from the face of the Earth, no amount of protest or international pressures will deter Israel

I agree with Parth Guragain. In North Korea Millions of people have been starved and killed by the government. No journalists are allowed to go there…Why are journalists complaining about not being able to go into Israel when they should also be making a bigger effort to voice their complaint about other countries. Also you hardly hear much about North Korea and the reporting of the deaths that happen frequently.

Israel’s action is deffensive but more need to be done for the safety of innocent women and children.

No Israel’s action never been defensive. Israel always search or create a pretext to lunch its aggression against Arabs (mainly Palestinians and Lebanese).
This is a never stop crises (since the create of the state of Israel on the Palestinian land) each time Israel redefine under different title. It is time for the “Free world” to see what Israel is committing there and to act accordingly at least by stop supporting Israel militarily, economically and diplomatically.
It is time to act now it is the time to say to Israel you can’t go on for ever killing and terrorizing other countries and proclaiming that you are a victim.
Plz watch this movie it good example of how should the media talk to Israel from now on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11Qeca_aBSc

The UN has failed its duty of care, and its legal arm, the International Court of Justice and its way of doing business is to be ashamed.

No remorse for Isreal to recieve punches that it has not thrown. Hamas must stand the blows because it provoked retaliation and in this 21 Century, terrorism has no place whatsoever reason.

The international community has been greatly remiss in their tacit accession to the Israeli aggression. The protests have generated increased awareness of and possibly sympathy for Palestinian suffering in Gaza. However, it appears that Israel is unfazed by this and only concerned with the impending inauguration of Barack Obama as the next US president.

Just where are all the human rights organisations concerning other conflicts around the world.?

In the first eight months of 2008, UNAMA recorded a total of 1,445 civilian deaths, an increase of 39 per cent over the 1,040 civilian deaths recorded in the same period in 2007. Of those, 55 per cent were attributed to attacks by anti-Government elements, 40 per cent to pro-Government forces and 5 per cent to unknown agents.

Israel is doing what no other country is doing to try to aviod civilian deaths but the human shield policy of Hamas makes it, regretably, impossible to avoid them altogether

    President Bush

Should he be praised for his confidence or condemned for his arrogance?
I think that he should be ashamed for his arrogance and his progression regarding the war in the Middle East, (Current war)…..

    Dear BBC,
Since 1948, who first did what to each other as far as Israel / Palestine is concerned ?
I believe Palestine just provokes Israel in order to get world favour and recognition by shooting from crowded places like schools, mackets, etc so as to use the children and the innocent as human shields and blame it on Israel should Israel retaliete.
My question further is , are there no Palestinians in Israel living in hamoney with jews? If yes , How then do they live and why are they not targets?

I would not in fact care if all the Palestinian children and women where whipped out if it would stop a multiplication of terrorists in the world .

    Hello again
Get your finger close to the delete button.
This is a serious question that I would like some feedback on.
In view of the fact that the squatters are always complaining about rockets being fired against them.
Couldn’t these rockets be construed as a message to the zionist squatters saying, “we do not like you sqatting our country, we would like you to leave”?

But where are the protests against the terroists and all their attacks over the last 8 yrs ,if you support terroists you are as bad as a terroist ,if you dress in civilian clothes to hide then your still a terroist and a legit target ,you can make deals with many people but not people who train their own people too be suicide bombers from when they are born ,everyone loses land in wars every single country has ,if you attack and you lose bad luck ,suck it up and move on dont be a bad loser ,and now they complain after israel defends itself after 8 yrs of terroism ?you asked for it terroists now you have got it ,they are nothing but murdering criminals ,they are not a legit gov ,they even kill their own just for the heck of it ,stand up for teroists if you like but that makes you no better than they are ,if only the same people would stand up for the people murdered by the terroists ,but they dont in fact they celebrate ,there is no such thing as alegit terroist .

American Mid East policy is dominated by the Isreal Lobby which has used its’ financial clout and concntrated focus to intimidate Congress and Presidents except for Eisenhower .The US has consistently blocked UN resolutions unfavorable to Isreal. There will be no peace if the US continues its’ robotic support of Isreal as shown by the pathetic kow towing by US politicians. Not even 9/11could stir Americans from their torpor and connect that attack to US anti-Arab policies in Palestine Bush used it as an excuse to invade Iraq which had no involvement ..He was a tool of the neo-cons who are nothing more than unregistered Isreali agents. Peace can only come when major powers have leaders of integrity who will approach geo-political problems in an even handed way .That’s a personal characteristic in short supply in most politicians.
