This Monday we’re going to do something unusual. While Chloe is hosting our second edition from London (that’s the one that goes to Africa), I’m going to be co-presenting on 702 Talk Radio in South Africa.
We’re going to considering the state of their nation and there’s an open invite for you all to take part. You can only hear this show on 702, Cape Talk or online at http://www.702.co.za, but that won’t stop you taking part. If you’d like to be a caller on the 702 show on Monday, and talk with South Africans about what’s happening in their country, please email me or leave a message here asap.

To Mohammed Ali:
A volunteer is someone who offers to do work without asking for pay in return.
Sometimes volunteers are fed. This is traditional for volunteers working for public radio pledge drives, working for political candidates, and when a friend is asked to help another friend move their household belongings to another house, those friends understand that they do not expect to be paid, but if the moving party has good manners, they will be well fed.
I once had a very optimistic plan for ending the war in Iraq. I pointed out that the president had justified the war by saying he was fighting evil people who wanted to kill innocent American citizens. I suggested that if enough innocent American citizens would volunteer to go and live in Iraq, as invited guests of Iraqi citizens, then the clerics who commanded the faithful to kill their enemies would have to decide whether they would prove these accusations false or true.
If they continued to command their followers to kill innocent people, who were invited guests in their homes, then they would prove the accusations true, and deserve their fate.
But if they decided to say that they would prove these accusations were lies, and they commanded their followers to lay down their weapons and stand beside these foreigners unarmed, as innocent people of faith themselves, it would then be plain for the world to see that the foreign combat forces in Iraq had come there with weapons which served no purpose, except to kill innocent civilians, regardless of number or nationality.
It would seem to me the only thing to do in that case would be to admit that all the killing had been done to justify the crimes of a liar, face the consequences and go home.
I told this idea to several people in my home town who opposed the war. They did not believe I was being very realistic.
OK. So I probably missed the point of Mohammed Ali’s question. It’s more likely the interest was specifically in what sort of volunteer positions were being advertised by the BBC. I’d be interested to know more about that myself.
I assume that someone at the BBC still reads all these comments, regardless of how many days after the fact they are posted. Could someone post here more about the type of volunteers the BBC is looking for, or post a link to a site with more detailed information?
I want to join you.
